of a life defined
by momentary edges,
each edge a world come upon another.

Embracing Paradox: Navigating the Crucial Transitions of Life

Event Dates: March 14 -16, 2008

New opportunities in the life of an individual, organization or society often announce themselves, paradoxically, through difficulty, confusion and a profound sense of losing anchorage. The deeper artistic approach to this rearranging is to see it as the first stage in something new and enlightening, rather than something to be avoided. New possibilities almost always come through embracing larger, as yet unknown patterns that in the beginning we cannot recognize. We experience ourselves in these crucial, shifting transitions, as attempting to move into the next stage of life. This movement may be in our careers as we attempt to widen and deepen the remit of our work. It may be as citizens in societies that are being enlarged into a more comprehensive global conversation.

In the midst of these ever growing and challenging complexities, how do we navigate these challenging waters, and above all have a good life; a life worth living, in the midst of it all?

Through the insights of poetry and the poetic tradition and with a good deal of humor and story, David looks at the part of us, that in a way already lives over the horizon and beyond the boundaries which our inheritance might have set for us. He looks below our normal everyday definitions of the imagination as the ability to think up new things, and goes to a deeper interpretation shared by poets such as Keats and Coleridge who saw the imagination as a much larger faculty of belonging. David sees this as a way of making a home in a living, unstoppable, complex world.

The event begins with a Friday evening session, followed by sessions Saturday morning and afternoon and concludes on Sunday morning.
